Optometry is a profession in healthcare, which focuses the health of the eyes, such as the visual system, vision and the vision processing in humans. Although not all programs, require you to finish college before enrolling, but you still need to complete three years of a four year program before you will be admitted. You have to complete first your degree in bachelors before obtaining the degree.

You are also required to take the admission exams. This is one of the requirement when you are enrolling in an accredited and reputable school. Make sure to perform well in your exam results to have a higher chance to be accepted. You read all details, especially about the rules of conduct, eligibility requirements, test regulations and the testing procedures. If you want an assurance to pass the tests, you can also enroll in an OAT preparatory course to develop your performance.

You must complete a doctor of optometry course. This will take four years before the completion and must be done in an accredited school. The cost for the course depends on the school you have chosen. You should also consider in completing a postgraduate residency program.

The residency program allows the optometrist to gain a certain practice to work in the field. They will be guided by professionals to improve and develop their skills and knowledge. The residency programs help those people who are underprivileged in the community.

The states are also requiring each practitioner to obtain a license. You have to complete first your course in Doctor of optometry before getting the license. You have to take various exams in written and orally. You also need to take some additional exams if required by the state. For a license renewal, you must check the requirements in the state. This is necessary to keep your license current and active.
