About Northern Ontario Walleye Fishing

By Nancy Gardner

People can have different scenarios of fishing the walleye. Some fishermen will go for numbers. Others choose the sizes. There are others who get happier on finding hotpots at the rocky points or at the off shores. The activity of northern Ontario Walleye fishing can get boring when you get single catch after another. You will not succeed to get a large catch by the end of your trip.

During the spring, they choose to stay where there is a river current or closer to the shore. You can find them three to ten feet from the shores. In Canadian lakes, the fish that do not spawn in river do so at the shores. By the end of the fishing season, most of them are through with spawning. They will however hang around the places to protect the beds.

When you mount light jigs, hurry up and catch along the shores. Then aggressively retrieve it since these fish are usually aggressive at this time. It is advisable to make use of brighter colors like white, red, chartreuse and yellow. There are some that will come to feed at the jig. They will still come because they get attracted to the bright colors. They become aggravated by these colors. Most of them will be attracted to the white colors.

During the day and at early spring, fishermen mostly catch the smaller males. They can easily be found at the river beds. During the day, the big females go to the deeper waters. If you are really interested in their size and not the numbers, go fishing in the places where these fish were not spawning. Move deeper than fifteen feet. The bigger females prefer to be here.

You also need to have awareness of special spots where you can find fish in large numbers. If you go fishing in the spring, remember to wear original and small Rapala. You then will slowly troll along shore lines. The fish are present at about four feet inside the waters. Remember that the best spring colors are red, chartreuse, blue and fire tiger.

As you continue trolling, you will get to a point where you will hit them. Begin preparations because most are here. Stop the boat there and begin casing. Do not troll severally at that point because you will likely scare them. They immediately stop the feeding and begin to disappear.

If you are normally stubborn in your job, and you are never ready to do new things, then you would never come to appreciate northern fishing. You will hold on to believe that southern waters are better. All fishermen should be aware that around ninety five percent of the fish are in shallower waters during springs. In the afternoon, bigger females tend to move deeper to hide from the sun and the pikes.

They will go deeper during summer and also stay at the river mouths or the layoff points in the rocks. The rock drop offs are good also. If a lake has flat structures, then they will prefer to stay in the thick weeds where they get better protection from the scorching sun.
